When you CAN stack coupons

Some retailers have separate coupon fields for different types of discounts. You might see one field for a promo code and another for a gift card or store credit. In these cases, you can often apply both.

Other situations where stacking works:

• Promo code + free shipping code: Many stores treat shipping codes separately from discount codes.
• Promo code + cashback: Browser extensions like Rakuten or cashback credit cards typically work on top of promo codes because they're separate systems.
• Promo code + sale price: Most stores apply promo codes on top of items already marked down, unless the fine print says otherwise.
• Store credit + promo code: Gift cards and store credit usually have their own payment field and stack with discount codes.

When you CAN'T stack coupons

The most common restriction: one promo code per order. If the checkout has a single coupon field, entering a second code replaces the first. There's no way around this — it's built into the checkout software.

Other restrictions to watch for:

• "Cannot be combined with other offers" — This means the coupon won't work if any other discount is already applied, including sale prices.
• Category exclusions — Some coupons exclude certain brands or categories even if stacking is normally allowed.
• Minimum spend requirements — The minimum is usually calculated after other discounts, so your first coupon might push you below the threshold for the second.

When order matters

If a store does let you stack coupons, the order you apply them changes your final total. A 20% off coupon applied to a $100 cart saves $20. But if you apply a $10-off coupon first (bringing it to $90), the 20% only saves $18. That's a $2 difference.

How to check if a store allows stacking

• Look at the checkout page — multiple coupon fields usually mean stacking is allowed.
• Read the fine print on each coupon for "cannot be combined" language.
• Try applying a second code — most stores will show an error message immediately if stacking isn't supported.
• Check the store's FAQ or coupon policy page, often linked in the footer.
