How the trap works

Retailers set free shipping thresholds on purpose. They know most carts land just below the minimum. When you see "Only $8 away from free shipping!" your brain focuses on avoiding the shipping fee — not on whether the $8 filler item is a good deal.

Here's a real example. Your cart is $42. Free shipping kicks in at $50. Standard shipping is $6.99.

• Option A: Pay shipping. Total: $42 + $6.99 = $48.99
• Option B: Add an $8 item to hit $50. Total: $50.00

Option B costs you $1.01 more than Option A. The "free" shipping cost you money.

The breakeven rule

The math is simple: compare the gap to the threshold against the shipping cost.

• Gap < shipping cost: Adding filler saves money. You're spending less on the filler than you would on shipping.
• Gap = shipping cost: It's a wash. You'll pay the same either way.
• Gap > shipping cost: Just pay for shipping. Filler items would cost more than the delivery fee.

When you should always add items

The breakeven rule only applies to filler items — things you're buying solely to hit the threshold. If you genuinely need or want the additional items, always add them. You're getting something useful AND free shipping.

Other times it makes sense to add items:

• Consumables you'll use eventually: Toothpaste, batteries, cleaning supplies — if you'll need them within a month, buying now to hit the threshold is practical.
• The gap is very small: If you're $1.50 away from free shipping and shipping is $6.99, even buying a pack of gum saves you $5.49.
• The filler item has resale value: If you can return the filler item for a refund and keep the free shipping, some stores allow this. Check the return policy first.

Why retailers use thresholds

Free shipping thresholds increase average order value. Research shows 93% of consumers will add items to qualify for free shipping. Retailers know this and set thresholds 20-30% above the typical cart size. The threshold isn't about covering shipping costs — it's about getting you to buy more.
