Why Your Coupon Code Isn't Working
1. The code has expired
This is the most common reason by far. Coupon codes have expiration dates, and many coupon listing sites don't remove expired codes promptly. A code you found online may have expired days or weeks ago.
What to do: Check the expiration date if listed. If the coupon site doesn't show dates, try the code but don't be surprised if it fails. Codes found through Google search results are especially likely to be expired.
2. Your cart doesn't meet the minimum spend
Many coupons require a minimum order total. "20% off orders over $75" won't work on a $50 cart. The confusing part: some stores calculate the minimum before tax, some after. Some calculate it before other discounts, some after.
What to do: Read the fine print. If your cart is close to the minimum, add a small item to push over. Use our Free Shipping Calculator to make sure the added item is worth it.
3. Product exclusions
Common exclusions include sale items, specific brands, gift cards, clearance merchandise, and new arrivals. A coupon might work for most of the store but exclude the exact category your item falls under.
What to do: Check the coupon terms for excluded categories or brands. If your entire cart is excluded items, no code will work.
4. The code is for new customers only
Many of the best coupon codes (15-25% off) are new customer acquisition offers. If you've ordered before or even just created an account, these won't work. The store checks your email address or account history.
What to do: Look for codes explicitly marked "all customers" or "existing customers." New customer codes are not applicable if you have an account.
5. The code is one-per-customer
If you've already used a specific code on a previous order, it won't work again. Some codes are literally one-time-use — one person uses it and it's dead for everyone.
What to do: If you see "unique code" or "single use," that code was generated for one specific person. Codes shared on coupon sites that are single-use will only work for the first person who tries them.
6. You're typing it wrong
This happens more than people admit. Common mistakes: extra spaces before or after the code, confusing O (letter) with 0 (zero), confusing I (letter) with l (lowercase L) or 1 (number), and wrong capitalization on case-sensitive sites.
What to do: Copy-paste instead of typing. If pasting, watch for trailing spaces. Most sites are case-insensitive, but not all.
7. The code is region-locked
A coupon meant for UK customers won't work if you're shopping from the US, and vice versa. This is common with international brands that run different promotions by country.
What to do: Check if the coupon specifies a country. If the coupon site has a country selector, make sure you're viewing codes for your region.
8. Another coupon is already applied
Most stores only accept one promo code per order. If a code was auto-applied (from an email link, browser extension, or URL parameter), entering a second code might fail silently or replace the first one.
What to do: Check your cart summary for any existing discounts before adding a new code. If a discount is already showing, removing it and trying your code might work. Read our guide on coupon stacking for more details.
The bigger picture
Research shows that only about 35% of coupon codes found on public websites actually work. That doesn't mean coupons are useless — it means most codes you find weren't meant for your situation. The codes that work best are ones sent directly to you by a retailer, or codes found on the retailer's own social media accounts.
